The Agora or the ancient marketplace can be admired in the Thassos capital of Limenas. Its perimeter walls and a few columns have been preserved till nowadays, yet still the place is literally suffused with history. In the ancient times, Thassos used to be a significant trade centre. Originally the Agora included some more edifices like temples dedicated to Dionysus, the god of fertility and harvest, and Poseidon, the god of the seas; and an ancient theatre. Despite being built between the 2nd and the 6th century BC, the place was only discovered in the 1950s. Today the visitors can see it for free at any time of the day.
