Maries
Maries village
To get to Maries, you need to turn off the main road starting in the Skala Maries resort, passing through a fertle valley with ore mines that were used since antiquity nearby. You will pass by the path leading to the Monastery of Kimisis Theotoku (Panaguda) and continue through the gorge along the river, passing by the small church of a Ag. Ioanni-Marioty and the chapel of Ag. Georgios on the right. Maries has typical picturesque narrow streets and old houses, all that surrounded by green vegetation. On a small square, you will also find a little church built in 1800 and dedicated to Taxiarchs. Based on the testimony of the local pastor, it is the oldest church on the island. Its pulpit is beautifully decorated with woodcarvings, with its ceiling made of chestnut wood. This is also where the Choros (a large rounded wreath) is hanging. In the church, you will find the icon of Ag. Ioanis - the martyr of the orthodox church who was tortured there to death by the Turkish in 1652 since he refused to change his faith.
From Maries, there is another path leading to the island interior. Near Gena, you will find a water reservoir - a lake surrounded by rich green vegetation. Then the path continues past the Monastery of Ag. Panteleimonas through the island interior up to Mikro Kazavita.
