Panagua
Panagia
The small interior, almost mountain village is interesting mainly for its Orthodox church built in a traditional Byzantine style. Another of its attractions is also the ´Spring of Love´: its surroundings are well maintained, and in the trunks of the surrounding planes trees, there are hollows in the shape of a heart which are illuminated at night, creating a romantic atmosphere. The legend has it that the girl who drinks from it will get married in a year. The locals also say that the plane tree is the oldest on the island. In the village, you can buy delicious honey with walnuts, pickled fruit, and top quality olive oil cold-pressed olive oil.
Between 1838 and 1840, this wooded mountain village was the main centre of the island, stretching on the mountain slope with a view of the long Golden Beach and the resort of Skala Panagia with the Chrysi Amoudia beach. The houses in the village are spacious, with their roofs covered with grey slate. The village landmark is the Church of Panagias from 1832 in which pieces of marble originally from medieval edifices can be found. On August 15 every day, there is a fair during which the visitors are served stifado.
