Theologos
Theologos
To get to Theologos, you need to drive from the seaside resort of Potos that once used to be the Theologos port. The village grew up from grey rocks in the foothills covered with low vegetation, separating the east part of Thassos from the south. From the square under the old plane tree, there is a beautiful view on Kufokastro on the opposite side (the locals say a Frank castle used to stand in the place), while the tavernas and cafés are welcoming the tourists. You will find there old houses, some of them quite run-down, others painted withblue vitriol according to a local custom. Yet there is one houses which is clearly different from the others -the restored house of Chatzigeorgis Metaxas who was the ´president´ of the island and the organizer and leader of the uprising against the Turks in 1821. When walking through the streets, you will actually notice huge differences - there is an old abandoned olive oil mill but also splendid churches like Agia Paraskevi with mural paintings, a wooden carved heart, and a tall bell tower, the Metropolitan Temple of Ag. Dimitrions decorated with fine woodcarving - a bishop´s throne and a pulpit from 1806, ot the Temple of Panagia from 1870. The village churches are covered with slate tiles.
The village has a small ethnographic museum with tools, embroideries, a weaving loom, and local folk costumes. During the first wekk in August, there are cultural events held regularly in Theologos - theatre performances, an an exhibition of embroidery works, a presentation of a typical Thassos wedding…
Near Theologos, above the Ag. Vasiliki Gorge, you will find the Monastery of Panagia. The locals say the last monk lived there in the 19th century, who worked there as a locksmith, yet after his death the monastery remained abandoned. Written sources first mention the monastery in the 18th century. You can see there the main temple, monastic cells and a workroom.
