The Church of Agia Mavra with a beautiful church tower, a significant piece of island architecture, can be found near the village of Maherado lying almost in the very heart of the island. When the bells of the church start ringing, they are said to be heard all over Zakynthos. In its premises, the sanctuary from the 14th century is hiding precious religious objects including icons (of which one is said to be miraculous) and mural paintings. The place is regularly visited by the locals but also pilgrims and tourists.
