Church of Saint Dionysus
Probably the most famous church on the island from the beginning of the 18th century, dedicated to its patron saint, Dionysus, can be admired near the port of the Zakynthos capital. The beautiful bell tower in the foreground resembles markedly the one on the St. Mark´s Square in Venice, attractin attention especially at night when it is nicely illuminated. Its interior, besides beautiful paintings, woocarving gems and golden ornamentation, is even hiding the remains of the very Saint Dionysus who was born on the island. Maybe it was thanks to his protection that the Church of Saint Dionysus was one of the few buildings that were not damaged by the disastrous earthquake in the 1950s. Every year, pilgrims come to the church to commemorate the gracious monk, celebrating both his birth and death.
