One of the oldest constructions on Zakynthos, the Monastery of Anafonitria, can be found in the north-west part of the island near the village of Plemonariou. This place from the 15th century was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and it consists of several edifices. One of them are the remains of the original defence tower, today a bell tower. There are legends on the monastery related to Saint Dionysus. This is where he is said to have spent the last significant years of his life. Inside the monastery, you will see precious icons and paintings.
