Chora, the capital
Chora, the capital
The capital town called Chora is at the same time the most picturesque place on the island. At first sight, you will be enthralled by the narrow paved streets contrasting with the white Cycladian houses and little walls covered by loads of blooming bougainvilleas, evoking an unmistakable atmosphere. The town is situated on a small peninsula of the east coast, enclosed by two white beaches. In the town centre, you will find a combination of different styles of Venetian, Byzantine but also Ottoman architecture. Curiously enough, the medieval character of the town is nicely and naturally refreshed by the local stylish little shops, cafés, and tavernas. In the centre you will find two squares. The first paved one, with a full-grown plane tree, is dotted with bars and restaurants, while the second, covered in marble, is decorated by a statue of an unknown sailor, and there is a magnificent view on the old town with the remains of the castles and the sea surrounding the island. Andros Island is known for its high concentration of artists who usually work and exhibit their works here in Chora in its museums and small galleries.
Tourist facilities
It goes without saying that in the capital you will find institutions like bank, post office, supermarkets and police station.
