Sounion
Sounion
In the southernmost point of Attica peninsula, you can find the Cape Sounion and also a municipality of the same name, attracting visitors from all over the world.
What to do in Sounion
On the rocky cape itself, there is one of the most significant Greek historical sites rising to the sky - the Temple of Poseidon. It comes from the 5th century BC, which is quite impressive. Despite its age, the construction is very well-preserved, and so it is a frequent destination of tourists with cameras. Till nowadays, you can find hundreds-years-old writings on the temple columns, left by many different nationalities that were driven to the place due to different historical events. It is said even the romantic poet, George Gordon Byron, inscribed there his name. In the near souvenir shop, you can buy something small for a keepsake and refresh youself in the restaurant. In the vicinity you can also find the remnants of the Temple of Athena visitors tend to miss out.
Sounion beaches
You will find several nice beaches in the area. On the coast, there are tavernas, cafés, hotels, and small accomodation facilities. The beach has no sand, only small rough stones and pebbles, but that doesn’t really make the place less picturesque. One of the nice activities can be for example a boat ride. In the surroundings, you can look around for other secluded places and bays offering peace and privacy.
