The monastery of Atros can be found a few kilometres from the town of Poros in the south-east of Cephalonia. For centuries, this religious building was located at the height of 750 m on the Mount Atros, being dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The steep climb can be quite demanding, yet the magical view in the landscape, especially on sunny days, will be more than rewarding.

The original sanctuary comes from the 8th century, and so, it is said to be the oldest on the island. Yet throughout the long hundreds of years, it was hit by many disasters, including fires and earthquakes, damaging considerably its construction. The monks believed better times would come though and so the monastery has been restored several times.
