Poros Resort
Poros, a very lively port and at the same time a recreational resort, can be found about 40 km from the capital of Argostoli, in the south-east of the island. From the original fishing village, the town has grown up into the today´s tourist destination.
The town built along the coast, mostly after the devastating earthquake in the 1950s, with houses scattered on the surroundings green hills descending gently up to the beaches and the clean sea, can offer the necessary peace and relaxation to its visitors. That is why Poros is a place sought-after mainly by families with children but it is not exceptional to meet there couples of all age groups; although the resort is not really too much adapted for teenagers. In the night, people usually go there for a walk on the beach and in the town at the sunset, rather than enjoying hilarious entertainment in an alcoholic haze. There are spots offering this kind of fun but this cannot be compared to other renowned resorts.
Poros beaches
The main beach in Poros, standing out for its length and with its surface covered with sand and pebbles, is located in the very resort; but there are plenty of other bays in the surroundings where you can enjoy your privacy. The clean water is tempting for bathing and water pleasures.
What to do in Poros?
In the local shops, you can get articles of daily use, basic foodstuffs, and souvenirs.
Both along the coast and in the town, you will find tavernas, cafés and restaurants. On the outside terrace of some of them, you can relish the peaceful life in the port to the fullest. You can accompany this with some of the local delicacies, like the famous Robola wine or the traditional fish, seafood, feta cheese of delicious lamb meat dishes.
If you like walking, in the afternoon you can set off to the river Vohinas hidden under the shade of pine and plane trees. In the nearby valley under the Mount Enos, you will find archaeological sites with tombs and more 3.5 thousand years old rarities. Poros in particular is associated with the mythology about the illustrious strong man of Hercules.
If you want to set off further to the island interior, it is recommendable to rent a car.
