Argostoli Resort
Argostoli is the island capital and an important port. Like many other parts of Cephalonia, it was damaged by a strong earthquake in 1953. It is hidden in the Argostoli bay approximately in the middle of the island. There are boats departing from the port to Lixouri, the second largest town of the island located on the opposite side of the bay, several tiems a day.
Argostoli places of interest
Argostoli is a lively town where you will find plenty of tavernas, bars, souvenir shops and also a great number of Greek supermarkets. All the action in the town is concentrated around the Valianou square. In the adjacent streets, you will find small shops with souvenirs and foodstuffs. During the high season, both the square and the main streets, Lithostroto, are closed, becoming a pedestrian zone.
On the waterfront, you can buy fresh fish in the small boats of the local fishermen. Another interesting experience can be observing the turtles that are reaching the coast.
Argostoli is connected with the opposite coast by the bridge of Drapanu from 1813, with an obelisk approximately in the middle - the Radikalu monument, considered to be the symbol of freedom.
In the port you will also find a signpost to the windmills of Katavotres located 1.5 km away (the sea water that propelled the windmills was disappearing in limestone rocks to flow out on the east coast of the island near Karavomilos and Melisani. The course of the water was discovered in 1963 by Austrian geologists who made an experiment colouring the water. At present, the windmills are already quite run-down, as they were damaged a lot by the strong earthquake un 1953.
On the northern promontory of the island, the access road to the port is protected by a sparkling white lighthouse of Fanari.
