Sami
Sami Resort
One of the most charming places on Cephalonia, the town of Sami, is located in a bay of the same name on the east coast of the island. The local port is the second busiest one with ships departing daily to Ithaka and Italy. Till nowadays, this nice town with about one thousand permanent inhabitants lives with the Captain Corelli´s Mandolin movie which was shot in the surrundings, and the very town of Sami became a temporary home of the whole film crew and popular actors. Many shops, tavernas and bars are decorated with photos from the shooting.
What to do in Sami?
Along the port, there stretches a relatively long and very nice colonade fringed by littles shops, tavernas, bistros and bars. Although the town is lively, don´t really expect noise and bustle, as it is suffused with a relaxed atmosphere, and the locals are, just like elsewhere on the island, smiling and open-hearted. Sami is also a perfect point of departure to go on trips, whether by sea to the mythical island of Ithaka, 2.5 km by land to the cave of Melissani with a beautiful underground lake, and the cave of Drogarati where concerts are held occasionally due to its excellent acoustic conditions.
Sami beaches
The town has two beaches, a natural pebbly one in the east, and a mixed one in the west, partially equipped with umbrellas and deckchairs. The good thing about the western beach is that it is protected by natural shade cast by the trees and other green vegetation. Another beach nearby is the beautiful pebbly beach of Antisamos with crystal clear water.
