In the resort of Gouvia located on the north coast of Corfu, you can visit the remains of a Venetian ship yard from the 17th century of which whole vaults have been preserved and which creates a splendid atmosphere breathing with history and the ancient times of seafarers and sea warriors.

Since Gouvia is located in a bay that is literally embedded in the surrounding nature, and so protected from all the sides fromthe sea, in the past it didn´t pass unnoticed by all those who were interested in the island. That was also why a port and a naval base of the Venetians who ruled the island at that time were built there in the 17th century.  It was just for its location that the port became an important strategic point. In the 18th century, it achieved a phenomenal success when it defended against one of the Turkish attacks.
