The Gouvernetou Monastery was built in 1548 to pay tribute to the Virgin Mary. It was partially conceived as a fortress: its ground plan of 40 x 50 m has a tall wall all around, with a watchtower in every corner. Despite being fortified, the monastery was alsmost destroyed in 1821 during the fight for the Greek independence. The main temple can be found amidst the fortified area. You can visit the monastery only if you are dressed appropriately. Further on the path behing the Gouvernetou Monastery, there is another monastery, Moni Katholiko.
