Aperi village
A village located about 8 km from Pigadia with approximately 400 inhabitants, sitting in the foothills of a hill. Aperi once used to be the island capital, today it is the bishopric residence for the islands of Karpathos and Kassos. There is also the only grammar school on the island. In the recent years, the returnees from overseas are coming back to the reputedly richest village on the island.
Places of interest:
- episcopal church from the 19th century with a worshipped icon of the Virgin Mary. On August 15, spectacular celebrations of her feast day are held in the place.
- Elefthería (´Freedom´) Café where the first Greek flag in the village waved immediately after the Germans left an the Italians were disarmed in autumn 1944. To prepare the delicious coffee, water spewing from a spring right in the centre of the kitchen is used.
