Tristomo
The deep Tristomo bay as used already in the ancient times as a well-protected bay of the town of Vrykous. The bay was permanently inhabited till the half of the 20th century; today, you will only find there an elderly couple living with their flock of goats. Some of the houses are starting to get restored, and there is a well-maintained local church. Unfortunately the strong sea current carries lots of rubbish to the bay.
Tristomo can be accessed by boat from Diafani or on foot from the village of Avlona (about 4 hours walk); or you can also walk from Diafani along the east coast (about 12 km hike).
From Tristomo, there continues a signposted track to the end of the island up to the Stenó strait. Above it, you will find the Chapel of Agia Ekaterini in the place where an ancient sanctuary dedicated to Poseidon used to stand (and later also an early Christian basilica). The about 150 m wide stretch of water separates Karpathos from the small island of Saria.
