Kythira: Venetian Castle

The Venetian Castle embedded in a rock is rising above the capital of Kythira. It comes from the 14th century but it was built on the original Byzantine fortifications from the 12th century. Like many edifices of this kind, it also served as a point of defence against the raiders and other ennemies, repulsing their attacks and providing cover. With its position on the top of a rock, this place offers a magnificent view on the surroundings.

The castle interior is where the Historical record office of the island is located, the second most significant one after the one on Crete Besides that, you can admire there artillery guns and the remains of a cathedral with a bizarre white tower.
