Lefkas
The town of Lefkas
The capital town of Lefkas with a little less than 14 thousand permanent inhabitants is located in the north-east of Lefkada. It doesn´t really abound in monuments or historical sites, it is a rather small town with a main boulevard as a pedestrian area and a promenade along the waterfront with a new port lined by tavernas, bars and cafés. The town started to transform itself and grow only after an earthquake in 1971. In the capital of Lefkas, you will find medical care, pharmacies, schools, post office, and banks. In the town centre, there is also a square almost filled up with the gardens of local tavernas. If you visit some of the side streets and take a look into the courtyards in bloom, you will certainly forget that you are in the capital. The only historical buildings worth noticing are the ruins of the St. Nicolas Chapel, often associated with the poet Angelos Sikelianos who liked to write there, and the St. John chapel built in a rock where a hermit used to live for many years.
Probably the only curiosity of Lefkas is the drawbridge connecting the island with the mainland several times a day.
