Nafplio
The town of Napflio
Nafplio is a picturesque port town located on the east cost of the Peloponnese in the Argolic Bay. The town has a rich history reflected also in its current appearance.
The beginnings of the town are traced back to the Middle Ages - it was founded during there were only ruins of the town in the 2nd century AD.
The town was resurrected in the early Middle Ages with the construction of a merchant port. Napflio became significant during the Venetian rule in the 15th century when a fortress and ramparts were built. During the following centuries, the Ottoman Turkish were taking turns with the Venetians several times. After the town was regained by the Venetians in 1685, the Palamidi Castle, was built in the place, being the biggest Venetian castle whatsoever.
After the Greek War of Independece, Napflio shorty became the Greek capital (1829-1834) before the government moved to Athens.
