Kamari
Kamari Resort
The Kamari resort which was ruined by a devastating earthquake in 1956 and then completely restored has become one of the most popular places on the Greek island of Santorini to spend a summer holiday. It is located on the north-east coast of the island neat the town of Thira.
Who is Kamari suitable for?
Despite being frequently visited by tourists, Kamari isn’t really overcrowded. It is perfect especially for young but also older couples, or for families with grown-up children (small children could be quite disappointed by the beach of volcanic origin, interesting for the adults, but not suitable for children’s games). The beach is dark, its surface is rough, and under the hot summer sunshine, the beach gets even hotter than the sand. The sea can be accesed the best from the huge stones, ensuring a safe transition from the beach to the fascinating undersea world, also of a volcanic origin, that has been made for diving.
What to do in Kamari
The peace necessary for the nice idling on the beach is guaranteed mainly by the fact that transport is very limited there. On the main road lining the coast, there are plenty of souvenir shops, and the visitors can also go to the local restaurants, cafés, bars and tavernas, tempting for the tasting of delicious wines.
A sit-down over food and drink is nice not only during the day, but also in the evening when the view on the sea becomes even more romantic with the sun setting down. The bars and tavernas are open at night, too, and everyone can choose the kind of entertainment they like.
Those who love going on trips will certainly appreciate typical Greek nature and the traditional country architecture. The surrounding hills with the shining white facades of the old houses form a beautiful panorama, sunlit from the morning till the evening.
Kamari surroundings
Those who like to spend more time shopping, can combine the pleasant with useful and go on a bus trip to the town of Fira with dozens of small shops of all kinds. The physically fit can climb to the very top of the hill where Fira is standing, and let themselves enchant by the jewellery of the locals sellers close to the monastery.
Another place worth seeing is the town of Oia or the finds of the old town of Akrotiri that are still being uncovered.
The lovers of history should definitely search for the nearby archaeological site of Thira where you can walk from Kamari. You need to count on the height difference of about 360 m though, and take enough water.
