Oia
Oia Resort
On the north-west promontory of the Santorini island, there lies one of the most beautiful island villages - Oia. The place where it is located was formed through volcanic activity. In 1956, Oia was almost razed to the ground by the devastating earthquake, from the many thousands of the original inhabitants, only a few hundreds survived. Together they restored the village, making it even more beautiful and charming. The rebuilding was made in a very sensitive manner, and so today Oia has a traditional appearance, not diturbed by the ugly tangle of cables like elsewhere - during the reconstruction, they were laid down to the ground. And so today, the visitors can admire its charming atmosphere. The narrow paved streets, small white houses with blue doors and blue window frames, coloured domes of the churches, and varied flowers - all that creates a perfect harmony with the glowing breathtaking sunsets.
What to do in Oia?
Some holiday-makers are afraid that for its popularity, Oia is not a good place for spending a peaceful holiday. Yet those who overcome this concern will never regret. Young people may be a bit disappointed by the not too much intense nightlife in the village, but they can still go to the town of Fira. For the others, there are countless opportunities for romantic walks and sit-downs over a glass of wine and traditional Greek dishes in the local tavernas, restaurants and cafés. Especially the dinners on the peaks of the cliffs with a splendid view on the sea are a completely unique and unforgettable experience.
In Oia you can also rest actively visiting the local souvenir shops. The quality of the goods (like glass or jewellery) is higher than usual in the resorts, and the shops are also nicer and equiped with air conditioning.
For variety’s sake, during your holiday in Oia you can visit the local Naval Museum with many models of ships and old maps.
You can also walk to the close Ammoudi (or go there on a motorbike), or climb the steep staircase to the port of Armeni.
Oia beaches
The two little beaches in Oia have been made for the lovers of non traditional holiday experiences. The staircase on which you can get to both beaches are also made of a material of volcanic origin, and they won’t really let you become too lazy.
