Skopelos - Chora
The capital of Skopelos
The island capital bearing the same name, Skopelos, sometimes also called Chora or Hora, is not only the island metropolis but also a very lively central port. Since the island doesn´t have its own airport, Skopelos is probably the very first place you will see when approaching the island on a ferry on a boat. And there is a lot to be looking forward indeed. A port town of an exceptional beauty will open up before you, with little houses built on vast slopes covered with a tapestry of green groves, a string of yachts anchored in the port, and the ubiquitous blue of the Aegean Sea. The town of Skopelos has been declared a conservation area.
Romantic Skopelos
In the town centre, there are charming little squares, churches and more jewels of the island architecture waiting for you. The narrow paved streets and secluded places full of stairs, balconies and flowers are inviting for romantic walks and absorbing the local atmosphere. After climbing on the hillocks above the town, you will be rewarded by a magnificent view on the remains of the fortification of the local castle, Kastro, and the little Agios Athanasios church. Besides that, the whole port and the wide seas will open up in front of you. Thanks to the high altitude of the town, in the centre there is not too much traffic, as cars can´t almost get there.
The port lives with its own life but still it offers a nice sit-down in pubs and tavernas where fish and seafood specialities are served. When relishing some of the tasty dishes and having a drink, you can observe the bustle in the port. Once you have filled yourself up, you can go shopping to some of the little shops with a variety of goods, mainly souvenirs, handmade articles, jewellery, ceramics, and fabrics.
Skopelos beaches
The nearest beaches can only be found outside the town. You can get there by some of the regular buses, a water taxi, or rent a car and travel on your own. Some of them can also be reached by walking. Most of the beaches are covered with sand and goldish and white pebbles, being located in some of the many bays aong the island coast. Their wavy waters are clean, crystal clear, beautifully blue, and safe both for bathing and practicing water sports.
What to do in Skopelos?
Despite being the capital, and so, you would expect that during the night, the town becomes a place full of crowds of shouting teenagers returning drunk to their hotel rooms only at dawn, this is really not the case. The town preserves its peaceful character, and with its few discos, everything is really calm. Everyone can simple find what they like the most without bothering the locals or other visitors.
