Kastro
Kastro
Kastro is an old settlement located in the foothills of the very centre of Thassos at the height of approx. 600 m a.s.l. There is an unpaved road to it from Limenaria passing through Kalivia. The village has a little square with a huge oak, under which you will find a café under the shade. There is also a church and the stone houses are scattered among the old fortification built as early as in 1403. Kastro has only been inhabited since the 19th century, then its inhabitants slowly started to move away. Nowadays, there are only a few people who mostly go back to Limenaria after the pastoral season has ended. On the edge of the village, you will find a white church with a cemetery surrounded by medieval ramparts. There is also a ´kinsterna´ nearby - a castle water reservoir.
From the village there are beautiful views of the surroundings up to the sea surface. When the weather is nice, you can see the outlines of the Athos peninsula in the distance.
