Limenaria
Limenaria Resort
If you want to visit the most popular resort on Thassos, set off to the south-west coast. This is where you will find the port of Limenaria, the second largest town on the island, set in a hilly landscape and literally drowned in the glaring greenery and the blue of the sea water about 40 km from the capital.
The town formed by traditional white houses with red roofs is built among hills, intertwinned with trees and bushes, with the remains of the original mediaveal settlement rising above the slopes. If you climb up to there, you will be rewarded by a fantastic view on the landscape with a bay, beaches and the hilly area covered with bushes. In the streets, you will encounter tavernas, restaurants and cafés inviting to sit down and taste the island specialities like fish and seafood but also international and continental cuisine. While the resort is peaceful during the day, during the night, some places change into dancing clubs and lively bars open till early morning hours.
The shops in Limenaria offer basic goods likes foodstuffs and gifts and souvenirs made by local artists.
If you like to know something about the history and culture about the place where you are spending your holiday, climb one of the hills where you will see the old building of the company that used to extract mineral resources in the place. The mines are still open for the public, and so, you can descend up to the bowels of the earth. There is also a foklore museum that will give you information about the island history. If you feel tempted by the surrounding nature, you can explore the hills and forests nearby. If you are not physically fit, you can rent a car or a motorbike.
In Limenaria, there is an operating fishing port and a wharfage for transport ships.
Limenaria beaches
There are several beaches near the resort from which you can choose the one that suits you the best. All of them offer safe and nice bathing in warm, clean and shallow water attracting families with small children and less experienced swimmers. On the contrary, the active and sporty ones can choose from a variety of water sports like windsurfing and water skiing. Except for the main beaches of Trypiti (a several kilometres long sandy beach) and Metalia (a rather small beach with fine sand and shallow water), there are more bays and secluded places hidden all along the indented coast, offering more privacy. Most beaches are covered with sand, little pebbles or stones, and on the famous ones you will find umbrellas, deckchairs, showers, refreshment and more facilities for your comfort.
