Right under the lofty Mount Ipsarion, the highest peak of the island in the north-east, there crouches the calm traditional village of Panagia. It doesn´t lie on the seashore, yet the seacoast can be found really close. Therefore it is an ideal position since all the other places are within a stone´s throw, including the mountains, the capital, and the sea. Panagia is hiding many picturesque places you will discover on your afternoon and evening walks through narrow paved streets and along white houses with adorable balconies. On your way, you will also encounter a source of drinking water flowing from the mountains.
The few shops in the village offer everything necessary - fresh pastry, fruit, vegetables, dairy products, drinks, but also souvenirs and art. In the local tavernas, cafés, and restaurants, you can try something of the local cuisine for fair prices. If you are lucky, you will happen to be there during a festival which is held regularly in the village, with dance, costume performances, loud music, drinking wine and eating traditional dishes.
History of Panagia
The village with a several hundreds of years old history, bearing a reference to the Virgin Mary both with its name and a church consecrated to her, used to be the most important town on the island in the past.
What to do in Panagia
The hilly area around Panagia is tempting for those who like walking. The highest peak, Mount Ipsarion, covered with green vegetation can be conquered within a rather demanding climb, yet if you don´t feel like taking too much risk, you can walk comfortably on a path to the very peak where you will be rewarded by a magnificent view on the wide island landscape.
Those who prefer making trips to know the culture and go shopping can set off to the capital located only a few kilometres far away. The transport is assured by regular bus lines. Besides that, you can visit other ersorts inthe surroundings like the famous Chrissi Ammoudai (The Goden Beach) or Skala Potamias.
