Spoa village
A small village located in the centre of the island being the narrowest and windiest place at the same time, often hidden in the clouds. Since the island is only 4 km wide in this place, there are beautiful views opening up both on the west and east coast. Before arriving at the village in the direction of Mesochori, you can´t really overlook the remains of windmills. In Spoa, there starts an about 20 km long dusty roads leading to the north to the village of Olympos and the port of Diafani. From the village, you can also drive down on the steep hairpin roads to the little fishing port of Agios Nikolaos with a nice beach.
Places of interest:
- remains of medieval windmills
- in the upper part of the village, you can see an old public washhouse with troughs placed in the greenery. They are still used to clean carpets.
- church of Agios Georgios with its beautiful wood-carved door made by a carver from Olympos. Apart from the motif of Saint George fighting with a dragon, it is also the two-headed byzantine eagle and peacocks as a symbol of an eternal life that will catch your attention. The most interesting part of the church interior is its richly decorated dome.
- if you stay in Spoa for a while, don´t forget to taste the local speciality, sardelés - sardines marinated in salt and oil. Or you can set off for a botanical trip to the village surroundigs where the best herbs can be picked.
