In the north-east of Santorini, 15 km from the town of Fira, you will find the resort of Perissa. The best time to spend there a nice holiday is between May and October when the temperatures range between 20 and 30°C.
Perissa beaches
The long beach with volcanic sand is protected against strong wind from the north by the rocky cliffs of Mesa Vounu, especially the hummock of Profitis Ilias. The beach, renowned as the most beatufiul one on the island, is washed by crystal clear sea water reflecting the azure blue sky. It is perfect for swimming and water sports, and in the evening, the visitors can feast their eyes on the magnificent clifffs lit by the red sunset.
What to do in Perissa?
Thanks to the hospitality of the locals and the business, there are plenty of bars, cafés and restaurants available for the tourists during the day and night not only in the centre of the resort but also on the beach. The lovers of Greek music and dance will be certainly delighted by the evenings over a glass of wine in the local tavernas. The restaurant owners bear on their mind all kinds of eaters, preparing fresh and tasty dishes of both Greek and continental cuisine. The local specialities, like moussaka, souvlaki, gyros or fish prepared in various manners, will please the picky tongue of the curious ones.
For the tourists interested in architecture, there is a Dominican monastery waiting for them above the town. In th centre of Perissa, they can admire one of the biggest churches on Santorini, the Church of Holy Cross, reconstructed in 1956 after a devastating earthquake. And last but not least, you can taste the traditional atmosphere of Greek settlements e.g. in the villages of Emporio and Oia.

Although you will find small shops with gifts, souvenirs and groceries also in Perissa, the best place to go shopping is the nearby little town of Fira, with regular bus connection from Perissa. The hill on which Fira is stretching can be a more demanding for those who are not physically fit, yet your effort will be rewarded with the charming atmosphere of crooked paved streets with a countless number of small shops. You will also find there car and motorbike rental service, so nothing stops you from going on a trip anywhere on the island.
