Potamia
Potamia
The village of Potamis can be found about 3 km from the village of Panagia. When arriving at the village, a nice view of the roofs covered mostly with red ceramic tiles amidst the green vegetation of trees will open in front of you. When looking down to the sea, you will a several kilometres long Golden Beach and the resort of Skala Potamia with its beach of Chrysi Akty. Above the village, there rises the highest peak of the island, Ypsarion. In Potamia you will find steep narrow streets, huge plane trees, water springs. There are also two churches, Isodiu Theotoku and Paleoimerologitu. There should also be the Vagí Museum with the works of the Thassos sculptor Polignot Vagí (1894-1965) who was born in the place (although he lived and worked in the US). The village depends a lot on tourism; originally it was a pastoral region famous also for growing giant beans and chestnuts.
Close to the village, there is a path leading up to the peak of Ypsarion. It takes about 2 hours to climb there.
