Skala Kalloni
Skala Kalloni Resort
The very attractive resort of Skala Kalloni is located in a vast bay of the same name protected by rocks, famous for (besides tourism) the production of sardines in its busy port, and many bird species. The untouched landscape is hiding its secrets waiting for the curious visitors.
Skala Kalloni beach
All along the Kalloni bay, the coast is covered with a long tapestry of deep goldish sand which, together with warm shallow water and calm water surface creates perfect conditions for less experienced swimmers and especially for families with children. You will also find there water sports, including the very popular windsurfing. After all, it is no wonder that the beaches belong to the main attractions there, since the first part of the resort name, Skala, means ´a beach´.
What to do in Skala Kalloni
If you are lucky, in August you can experience the local festival celebrating the already mentioned sardines. They are renowned for their taste which is said to be truly exceptional given the rare substancesand minerals contained in the locals waters. The visitors can taste their delicious meat for free and toast to their fame with a glass of the traditional ouzo or wine in the rhythm of temperamental Greek music and dance.
Every year, especially in spring and autumn, experienced ornitologists come to the bay to observe the migrating seagulls, flamingos, kingfishers, swans and other bird species. The fertile landscape of springs, rivulets and marshes is especially beneficial for them. Yet even if you are not an expert or a zoologist, this rarity will certainly delight those of a romantic nature who like to watch the beauties of the nature. In Skala Kalloni it is not exceptional to see wild and colourful flowers of different plants either.
As far as catering is concerned, the choice is quite wide. Obviously you shouldn´t miss the sardines prepared in different manners, whether grilles or fried, or other fish dishes. On the menu you will also find lamb and chicken meat, delicious sauces and vegetables salads, and of course, wine and ouzo.
Nightlife in the resort is not really the most lively one and it is concentrated in pubs and tavernas, or people prefer to go on a walk or sit down on the coast. During the day, besides sunbathing and swimming in the sea, you can go shopping or set off for a nice trip to visit some of the historical and archaeological sites nearby.
