Kalamaki
Kalamaki Resort
The peaceful resort of Kalamaki located on the east coast of Zakynthos is a perfect place for a family holiday. The rocky hillocks covered with dense greenery form a beautiful panorama surrounding the whole town. From the beach in kalamaki, you can admire the 483 m high Mount Skopos, one of the highest peaks in the region.
Kalamaki beach
The beach in Kalamaki (Kalamaki beach) is covered with fine goldish sand, inviting to build sand castle and for other children´s games. The entry into the sea in Kalamaki is very gentle, therefore suitable even for bathing with the smallest ones. Yet the crystal clear water is not attracting only the locals and the visitors; thanks to its quality, it has also become the home of the rare turtle species (being one of the biggest tourist attractions at the same time). Great attention is paid to the protection of the natural habitat of those animals, and so, the town is very calmboth during the day and night. Families with children don´t need to be afraid of the noise from the nearby airport either, since traffic during the night is limited or completely suspended. Also adrenaline sports (that can be disturbing if you want to relax in the hot sand) are prohibited in the place (but you can still search them in some of the surroundings resorts). At the end of the beach in Kalamaki, there is an unofficial nudist beach.
What to do in Kalamaki?
Despite its calm and family atmosphere, the town is full of Greek warmth and spontaneousness. On the main boulevard, you will encounter a countless number of shops with souvenirs, minimarkets with basic foodstuffs, bars, classical tavernas and restaurants. The staff is usually very nice and will adapt to the needs of the smallest ones offering child portions. The adults can taste quality wines from the vineyards nearby, and typical Greek delicacies like moussaka made of lamb meat, or sea fish prepared in a variety of manners.
If you like to go out at night, you can have fun on the local disco, or visit the nearby towns of Argassi or Laganas, or the capital, where you can also buy interesting souvenirs when exploring its maze of crooked streets.
From Kalamaki there is regular bus connection to the Zakynthos capital.
Those who prefer going on walks on fresh air can savour the beauties of the local nature and visit e.g. the plaster rocks known as the ´High Stones´, or the Smuggler Bay of Navagio with sky-blue sea and fine sand on which you can see a part of an old shipwreck.
