Finiki
Finiki Resort
About 3 km north of the Arkassa resort, in a picturesque bay surrounded by rocks, you will find a charming fishing village of Finiki, with its tavernas being renowned for its fish and seafood specialities both among the locals and tourists. The name of the villlage is related to Phoenicians who are said to have been doing trade in sea snails from which a very rare purple pigment was gained. In the 20th century, the originally deep bay silted up, and today, only small fishing boats can sail through there.
When driving on the access road above the village, the first thing that will catch your attention will probably be the blue and white little church consecrated to St. Nicolas, the patron saint of fishermen. The atmosphere of the place is completed by the colourful little boats in the port. Those who like bathing in the sea will find there a narrow sandy beach with a few tamarisks. In the north of the village, there is a more charming beach of Kamarakia, yet the notice in several languages is warning against dangerous sea currents.
Finiki places of interest
In the port, notice the monument with seven men in a small boat. Those saved the island during the hard times of war. Towards the end of the war, they set off for a dangerous navigation to Egypt to search for salvation at the British crew of the ship for the island inhabitants who were starving and lacking medicine. After three days, they actually arrived at Alexandria and returned with British warships and food supplies.
