Afandou Resort

Afandou is a bit weird - it is not a resort in the true sense of the word but a village located about 1.5 km from the beach. Between Afandou and the beach, you will find the main road connecting the south and the north of the island, so it is very busy. Of course the village has all kind of facilities, including tavernas, bars, and little shops. Yet the hotels are located quite far from the beach and the way is not really nice. Tours are mostly offered to the hotels or suites right at the beach, yet this area is also quite strange. The beach is about 5 km long and it is completely flat. For the photos, see the link. There is sand with pebbles on about 50-100 m, and then a sort of fields or gardens, but it all looks grey and unmaintained, covered permanently by the sand from the beach. In all that, you will find a tree or some sheet-metal shed here and there. There is a tourist train going to the place. 

Close to Afandou in the north-eastern direction, you will find the beautiful Erimokastro Caves.

Afandou beaches

There are several nice beaches near Afandou: those of Afandou and Traganou are actually two parts of one and the same beach which is quite fine, yet if you want to be in a nice and romantic environment, you should visit the beaches of Ladikou and Anthony Quinn located about 5 km north. You can always make there an all-day hiking trip but it is better to rent a car.

Who is Afandou suitable for?

The Afandou resort is suitable for those searching for peace and comfort and wanting to take a rest. There are also quite expensive tours to the luxury hotel Afanoud Bay, yet they are suitable for those who want to spend their holiday in a luxury environment between the beach and the swimming pool, and don´t care too much there is nothing to do and see in the surroundings. The beach probably won´t be overcrowded either as it is long and there is nothing in the surroundings, so, if you just want to read a book and rest, Afandou will be perfect. Given its location, the resort is also suitable for those who want to travel and are searching for a point of departure. You should definitely rent a car before you get there, as there are almost no car rental services in the place, and if so, they are overpriced.
