Makrigialos
Makrigialos Resort
The Makrigialos resort is perfect for all who want to enjoy peace and calm on their holiday, and like to travel.
Makrigialos is a rather small and sleepy coast village on the margin of the tourist location of Ierapetra – Makrigialos. The whole area is 26 km long and consists of several resorts/villages: Ierapetra, Koutsounari, Ferma, Agia Fotia, Galini, Achlia, Mavros Kolimbos, Koutsouras, Makrigialos/Analipsi, all of them lying along the coast way connecting the town of Ierapetra with eastern Crete.
What to do in Marigialos
There is not so much to do in the resort itself - the place consists of several long beaches, some of them with promenades, pavements shaded by trees, small hotels and other accommodation facilities, and roads lined by local tavernas, minimarkets and different shops. The beaches are covered with soft sand or small pebbles, and they are really calm. The road is not too busy - there are much less cars than in the resorts in the north of the island.
Makrigilaos surroundings
The south-east of Crete where the Makrigialos resort is located belongs to the driest region of the island. During the spring, everything is in bloom and the air is full of flowers scent, yet during the high season, the whole region is completely parched. Which can be annyoing for some but in all cases this will provide you a unique experience. As it has been already said, Makrigialos is suitable for those who like to travel and enjoy beautiful natural sceneries, warm weather and interesting landscapes. Just because of the dryness you will find there the kind of vegetation that is not to be seen anywhere else - white hills dotted with prickly bushes, sand dunes with desert flora, deep canyons that seem like if they were from a moonscape, yet their bed is covered with blooming oleanders and vast areas bearing no signs of civilization.
If you find the landscape featureless after some time, you can make a trip to the north to the mountains. A little less than two kilometres from Makrigialos, the landscape starts to be undulating, after five kilometres, you will find yourself in the mountains, and after ten kilometres, you will be surrounded by more than 1 000 m high peaks, beautiful valleys and untouched mountain villages.
If you are about to go for a trip from Makrigialos, it is recommended to learn at least some basic phrases in Greek, as in the mountains (except the bigger places with at least some tourism), you are not going to make yourself understood in any other language.
Makrigialos location
Makrigialos is located on the south-east coast of Crete about 26 km east of the town of Ierapetra. When driving from Heraklion, go in the direction of Agios Nikolaos and continue to Sitia. After about 18 km, you will see an exit on the right to Ierapetra. You will pass through Ierapetra and keep on the left. Then you continue driving along the coast and after 26 km, you arrive at Makrigialos.
