Agia Pelagia
Agia Pelagia Resort
The resort of Agia Pelagia is renowned for its beautiful sandy beaches and shallow, well protected bays with calm and warmed water. With the combination of large sandy and rocky beaches and promontories all around, Agia Pelagia offers a great variety of sports activities and also the possibility of snorkelling. Thanks to the indented coast in the surroundings of the resort, the place is perfect for the lovers of beach social life but also those who prefer peace and privacy.
What to do in Agia Pelagia?
Agia Pelagia provides all the facilities required and necessary for spending a nice holiday - calm tavernas, nice nature, small grocery stores and also a nice centre becoming lively at night. Unlike many other resorts in the north of Crete, Agia Pelagia is a very calm place as it doesn’t lie on the main road connecting the west and the east of the island, but about 3 km aside. The interesting thing in Agia Pelagia is the small church of St. Pelagia built on a rock right next to the sea in the place where one of the icons of the saint was found.
In case Agia Pelagia seems too small for you, you can always walk to larger resorts like Lygaria or Paleokastro only a few hundreds of metres away, or you can also visit some of the nearby historic sites. For example, in the village of Achlada, located about 4 km west of Agia Pelagia, there is a nice stone fountain and churches dedicated to Aghios Ioannis and Aghios Tryfonas with beautiful carved iconostas. Another interesting place in the surroundings is the Savathianon monastery with the inbuilt church of Aghios Antonio.
Location
The resort of Agia Pelagia is located on the north coast of Crete approx. 25 km north-west of Heraklion. In the nearby surroundings towards Heraklion, you will find a few more resorts, including the 2 km distant resort of Lygaria and the Paleokastro resort located 10 km away, anf the village of Rogdia. According to Greek scientists who made archaeologial research in the locality, the village of Agia Pelagia can be found in the place of the ancient town of Apollonia.
From the town of Heraklion, there is regular bus transport to the resort. If you travel there with your own car, drive about 20 km from Heraklion west on the main road. When the road starts turning from the coast to the left to the interior, you will already see the turns-off to the right and the road signs with the resort name.
