Maleme
Maleme Resort
The Maleme resort has not become a resort in the true sense of the word yet, but it keeps on developing. At present, it consists of several big hotels and a small number of pensions, scattered all along the pebbly beach.
What to do in Maleme
Although Maleme itself misses the genuine Cretan atmosphere, it is still a nice place to go to, since it is not so overcrowded like other, fully developed resorts, including the nearby Platanias and Agia Marina, for example.
Tourists in Maleme can visit several tavernas and general stores, in the western part of the town, there are a few bars and a disco. Yet if you want to experience real tourism or an interesting nightlife, you will have to visit some of the other nearby resorts, like the very busy Platanias, very rich in terms of social life, which can be reached within 10-15 minutes by bus.
Maleme surroundings
The Maleme resort os also a good point of departure to get to know the whole western part of the island. Such beautiful places like Hania, the famous beaches of Falasarna, Elafonisi or Balos, or the largest canyon in Europe, the Samaria Gorge, can be found really close, and they are very well accessible both by car and local public transport.
History of Maleme
Maleme is a very famous place since during World War II, it was this very town where the German paratroopers attacked Crete in 1941. Most of them died during the attack and they are buried in the military cemetery of Maleme which can be found on a hill above the town.
Maleme location
The Maleme resort can be found on the north coast approx. 15 km from the beautiful town of Chania. It is located on the main road between Chania and Kissamos. There is a bus stop, with very frequent connection to the surrounding resorts including Platanias and Agia Marina.
