Platanias Resort

What to do in Platanias

Platanias used to be a small village, yet today this area belongs to the largest tourist resort of west Crete. Like in other places, here you can also find plenty of tavernas, bars, discos or shops (but Platanias also has its own health-care facility, police station or a school). In case you get weary of the place, you can visit the nearby resort which is one of the largest in the area,Aghia Marina, located within a few minutes walking distance.

Who is Platanias suitable for?

Platanias is a great choice for tourists for several reasons:

• There is a long beach with soft sand and a very gentle slope into the water, and so, Platanias is perfect for sunbathing and fun also for families with children or people with movement difficulties. 
• Given its location, Platanias is a good point of departure to make trips to various historical sites but also natural places of interest; including many villages in the island interior with original Creta atmosphere, the beautiful town of Chania, the beaches of Gramvousa, Flasarna or Elafonisos, the White Mountains or the Samaria Gorge
• The Platanias coast and surroundings are quite plain, yet the nearby mountains peaks and hilly landscape are forming an amazing scenery - about 15 km in the south, you will find mountains with many peaks over 2 000 m high

History of Platanias

According to the existing sources, the rocky plain of Platanias used to be a place where the ancient town of Pergamos was built, including the tomb of Agamemnon. Based on Venetian sources, Platanias was a place with two independent settlements. Platanea and Pirgho Platanea.  

Platanias location

Platanias is located on the north coast approx. 12 km west of the town of Chania. The resort lies on the main road connecting the towns of Chania and Kissamos/Kasteli. If you are travelling by bus, there is a bus stop on a small square in the very centre of the resort.
