Souda (Hania)
Souda Resort
Souda is a small town near Chania in the north-west of Crete. You will find there a little square with a few bars, cafés, a small gyros restaurant and tavernas, mostly visited by the locals. In the side streets, there are small shops scattered all over the place. In fact there are not too many interesting things from the tourist point of view, except the local port. The Souda bay, protected by the Akrotiri Peninsula, is where merchant vessels and ferries not only from Athens arrive. This port is said to be one of the best and the deepest on Crete but also in the whole Mediterranean.
In the Souda bay, there is also a military base of the Greek navy, and a few restricted areas of NATO, which is reason why taking photos is strictly prohibited in the area.
In tourist guides, Souda is referred to together with a military cemetery that was built in memory of the 1 537 soldiers who fell in World War II. This allied cemetery can be found about one kilometre from Souda.
There are two beaches in the surroundings, both sandy ones, with a nice entry into the sea. The beach which is closer to Souda is larger, wider, and better equipped.
