Agia Roumeli
Agia Roumeli Resort
Agia Roumeli is not an independent resort but a point of departure to visit one of the biggest attractions on Crete, the Samaria Gorge. The main landmark of the resort is a large beach with a port with boats waiting for the tourists who have passed through the gorge and need to get to some of the ports with the buses that took them to the Omalos plateau.
What to do in Agia Roumeli?
Although you can find both suitable accommodation and a taverna in Agia Roumeli, the place is recommended for those who know what they are searching for, as the resort can only be accessed by boat or walking. Its beautiful surroundings and high mountains are forming a magnificent panorama, but that is all. There is no nightlife at all and after the last boats depart, there is complete peace and silence.
How to get there
There are several ways how to arrive at the resort. Probably the simplest option is to take a boat passing between Paleochora and Chora Sfakion. Other ways are very complicated - you could walk there or along the coast from Sougia, which is one of the most demanding and most dangerous (but also the most beautiful) paths on Crete, or from Chora Sfakion, which is not really enjoyable either as a few kilometres of the way pass through sand. The last option is to walk through the Samaria Gorge. If you arrive there with an organized trip, you will get to Agia Roumeli around 3 PM., you can lie on the beach for about two or three hours enjoying the sea, and around 6 P.M., the boat will take you back to your bus.
