Chora Sfakion
Chora Sfakion Resort
The small town with 400 inhabitants and the remains of mediaeval fortification is located on the south coast of west Crete and belong to the Chania region. This place is the southernmost point of Europe and it became famous especially as the destination of the holiday-makers coming from the Samaria Gorge. Most of the local inhabitants live by pasturage, fishing or growing olives, i. e. one of the traditional ways.
History of the village
Throughout history, Chora Sfakion was the place of various resistance movements. During the 19th century, the town was an important centre of opposition against the Turks, and after Crete was occupied by the Germans, the allied troops were retreating passing through the toen.
What to do there?
With its location, this region has been made for hiking tours and exploring the local canyons and gorges. The coast is fringed by crystal clear sea with calm water. In the town, you will find traditional tavernas, little shops and studios for rent. Another tip for a trip is the Frangokastello fortress, or also the Daskaloyiannis caves where the locals were hiding during hard times where they started to mint revolutionary coins.
