Xerokambos
Xerokambos Resort
The Xerokambos resort lies in a beautiful and in many ways unique region on the south-east coast of Crete. During the spring, the whole area is full of colours and covered with flowers, with the air being suffused with the scent of anemones and lilies, while in the summer when there is no precipitation for seven months in a row, it is the xerophytic flowers creating beautiful formations on the parched areas of the desert-like landscape.
What to do in Xerokambos
The village of Xerokambos itself is small but very long. Despite its beautiful surroundings and many interesting places in the area, the village has preserved its original atmosphere and village life. The resort has no centre, it is more a clump of houses built in various architectural styles, including classical small housesbut also large villas. Sometimes the houses are located quite far from each other and you can find orchards or agricultural areas between them, just like there are tavernas, and little shops scattered on its western edge. The prices for accommodation in the resort are rather low, preserving their high standard and quality though. When travelling to Xerokambos, you should take enough cash with you, as credit cards are not accepted there.
Who is Xerokambos suitable for
The Xerokambos resort is recommendable for all who are interested in travelling in south-east Crete, since it offers a quality background and it is really close to other very interesting places. It is also suitable for those who enjoy sandy beaches, romanticism, and privacy.
On the contrary, the resort is not recommendable for those expecting a fully equipped resort and lots of fun and the hustle and bustle of huge resorts.
Xerokambos location
The Xerokambos resort is located on the south-east coast of Crete approx. 15 km from Kato Zakros (with the Valley of the Dead Canyon and other historical sites), about 39 km from Sitia, 40 km from Palekastro. The vilage of Hohlakies where the Hohlakies Canyon with the Karoumbes Beach start, are located about 30 km far way from Xerokambos. For more distances, see the link.
If you are driving in the direction from Kato Zakros, there is a direct, yet unpaved road leading to the resort. It is passable by a normal vehicle, the way is quite well signposted.
If you are coming to Xerokambos in the direction from Heraklion, turn left in Sitia; then after about 15 km, there is a turn-off to Ziros from where there is a quality tarmac road up to Xerokambos.
If you are coming to Xerokambos from Ierapetra, it is possible to go up to Goudouras and then continue on unpaved roads up to Ziros and finally to Xerokambos.
