Agios Ioannis Peristeron
The green south-east coast of Corfu is literally dotted with tourist resorts of all kinds. One of the rather calm ones is Agios Ioannis Peristeron located between two other well-known and popular resorts - Benitses in the north and Moraitika in the south. The resort surroundings glare with summer colours of the plentiful olive groves and forests, and the turquoise sea water surface on the other side. You certainly won´t be disappointed if you get up a bit earlier in the morning, since the place is renowned for its splendid sunrises.
The local beach consists mainly of pebbles and sand. The water is crystal clear, and so, it can boast the the EU Blue Flag award for top quality. There are also umbrellas and deckchairs available. Those who can´t do without their holiday dosis of adrenaline can choose from the wide range of water sports including water skiing but also diving and exploring the undersea fauna and flora, just like in most resorts on the east and south coast.
In the resort you will find different kinds of accommodation facilities including luxury hotels but also cheaper bungalows. Many of them have their own swimming pool and offer rooms with a view on the sea. The bigger of the hotels organize their own cultural events and parties, concerts, or performances of traditional Greek dances, just like the local restaurants and tavernas also have their own cultural events. Besides all that, you can obviously find there delicious Greek and continental cuisine and tasty drinks.
From Agios Ioannis Peristeron, you can set off for a trip in any direction, and you will always discover some place of interest. Therefore the resort can serve you as an ideal point of departure, an oasis of peace where you can enjoy nice relaxation, and when you feel like having some fun, you can always set off to the surroundings. Since Agios Ioannis Melitieon lies between two other famous resorts - Benitses and Moraitika - your first steps will probably lead to these two places; or you can also use a rented car or a bicycle. In Benitses, the place worth seeing is especially the Shell Museum where you can see, besides the unique shells of sea animals, also other undersea fauna like stuffed fish or sea urchins. In Benitses, there are also restaurants and cafés, those with fish specialities being especially recommendable. Nearby you can also find the Mouse Island which is not an island but a petrified ship - which is what the site actually resembles and it is one of the most visited places on the island. The second one is the Achillion Palace, the famous summer residence of the Austrian empress Sissi who let it build in the 19th century and named it after the ancient god Achilles. Another possibility is to make a trip to the nearby lively resort of Moraitika. There you can take a rest on the local beach or sit down in some of the many restaurants, tavernas or bars. The island capital of Corfu/Kerkyra is located only about 15 km from Agios Ioannis Peristeron, so, you should reserve the whole afternoon or better the whole day for your trip, since there is really a lot to see. Kerkyra is a romantic city with many adorable secluded places and little streets, plenty of historical sites, and many restaurants and discos. You will even find there a waterpark where you can indulge in water pleasures.
